An occupational therapist is a health care provider who helps people of all ages make the most of their physical and mental abilities in daily self-care, work and play activities. Occupational therapists adapt tasks, tools and environments, or provide adaptive equipment or training to minimize difficulties and maximize one’s mental self-satisfaction and quality of life.

 

Infancy – Childhood

Primary occupation - Play
Occupational therapy helps babies and children with developmental needs that affect physical and mental development, resulting in problems of hand function, balancing ability, sensation, learning, social or self-care activities. Occupational therapists use toys or games and work closely with parents and schools during small group and individual treatment sessions.


 

Adolescence – Young adult
Primary Occupation - Learning
Occupational therapy helps the students and young learners deal with challenges related to maturity, difficulties in school life and socialization, as well as learning appropriate job behaviours. Therapeutic adaptations for daily living skills, classroom environment or learning materials, mobility, leisure and pre-employment are essentials for this age group.

Early Adult – Middle Age

Occupational therapy helps adults with mental problems or physical disabilities seek gainful employment and a happy family life. Occupational therapists help these clients learn or re-learn group and individual work skills, community living skills, and help them to adapt to environmental challenges in order to prevent future disability and maintain health.

Elder Adult – Frail Elder
Primary Occupation - Leisure
Occupational therapy helps elders with physical or/and mental problems which are related to aging or recent injuries. Some activities of daily living, leisure and recreation, or family activities can be particularly challenging for these clients. Occupational therapists assist elders in maintaining a sense of self-achievement through participation in activities.
